I need to recommend a book right away on this particular topic. "The Addictive Personality" by Craig Nakken. This is a secular book, not faith based, however its description of the addictive process is comprehensive and enlightening both to the addict as well as those who are close to addicts. In this book, Nakken describes the genesis, progression, and cycle of addictive behaviors which ultimately lead to the formation of an additional, addictive personality. It is this new addictive personality which constantly fights with the "self" for dominance within the individual.
Consider the following verse from the Bible: "For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want." (Galatians 5:17) This struggle against addictive behaviors is not new. In fact, this struggle, when considered within the context of our Christian faith, can be described as a "sin problem."
Nakken's suggestion for recovery "is found in the renewal of the Self; in forming and focusing on a caring, meaningful relationship with the Self; and, eventually, in forming meaningful relationships with others." (p.65) The addictive process drives an individual inward, away from the formation of healthy, reciprocating relationships. Instead, the addict finds himself lost and lonely, with diminishing returns on his addictive highs. Groups work because the addict begins to connect with others at the point of their most secretive behaviors. Their inward-focused living begins to shift toward an outward-reaching experience with others.
I have included a list of support groups in the sidebar. More than likely, you or someone very close to you, has experience dealing with addictive behaviors. Visit some of these websites to get more information about meeting times and locations in your area. Here is a link to "The Addictive Personality" by Craig Nakken.
