Remember the Saturday Night Live John Lovitz character: "Get to know me!"... the overly confident fix-your-fears, put-everything-back-together-for-you-if-you-only-knew-me guy? Maybe not. During the skit, the audience would anticipate Lovitz' bold declaration that the answer to all of your problems was to simply hang out with him. Of course, the humor was in the obvious creepiness of his character and the insincerity of his interest in your well-being.
So, what about this idea that you can begin to experience change by simply getting to know someone? Do you believe that your life can change by getting to know God? What if God is sincerely interested in your well-being? Can knowing God be the answer to all your problems?
The answer is simply "Get to know him."
By getting to know God, you will be able to answer these questions for yourself. Why would you think that you would have take someone else's word when you can find out for yourself. God doesn't want you to have second-hand knowledge of himself. Rather, he stands ready to reveal himself directly to you through the Bible and prayer.
These two components, the Bible and prayer, are the simplest way to find out who God is, and what he is really like. In fact, there is only one person that will respond to your prayer and only one person who will illuminate the truth contained in the Bible: God. You don't have to understand how he does it. But bear in mind that it is his power alone that can give you life, and that ought to get your attention. Get to know him and you will begin to truly live.
Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." -John 14:6
